As my first week comes to a close, I am reflecting on the WHY of this next chapter. We are at a moment of sea-change in the American Theater. We are reflecting on our values, our relevance, and our place in the wider world around us. When I look at the past years of Theater Alliance’s theatrical work and community leadership, I see a thriving organization that has been ahead of the curve on the WHY.
At Theater Alliance, we lead with our values, we create a radically hospitable space for all, we are deeply rooted in our community, and we create art that makes you lean in and feeds your spirit. The strong foundation laid by Raymond Caldwell, and all the leaders who came before, has prepared Theater Alliance to soar in its next phase. My passion is for creating a world where artists, arts institutions, and artistic practice are central to a thriving civic life.
So, I’ve found my sweet spot in creating work at the intersection of civic engagement and theater – and that is one of the reasons Theater Alliance and I are a great match.
But there is another reason too…I love a good party, and Theater Alliance brings the party! Sometimes that party is a champagne toast, sometimes it’s a backyard barbecue, and sometimes it’s a wake – but it’s always a celebration where everyone is invited.
And we all know that a good party is full of folks from all walks of life – it’s the place where you hear stories you’ve never heard before, find connections you didn’t know existed, and have a darn good time. That’s the spirit of Theater Alliance, and the spirit I bring to all my work – and I hope that you bring your spirit too, because that’s the kind of party we like to have!
Theater Alliance is primed for theatrical ambition, community growth, and artistic work that is based in justice and joy – I hope you’ll come with us. Come to Anacostia and visit us! Let me know your ideas and dreams for the future. Can’t wait to work with Theater Alliance to create this next phase in DC, and beyond, with you all by our side.
