Encore Presentation
“”Word” gives voice to frustrations, but also to dreams. The questioning spirit and synchronized energy of its performance are particularly galvanizing.” — The Washington Post
With brutal honesty and raw physicality, Word Becomes Flesh is a series of letters from a young man to his unborn son. The award-winning team returns to Theater Alliance for this encore production that uses hip-hop, dance, and music to explore what it means to be a black man in the 21st century. First presented during Season 13, this highly praised production received 5 Helen Hayes Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Ensemble.
Word Becomes Flesh is part of the Word Becomes Action Festival, a series presenting new works by local artists, community-based workshops, and conversations that explore and articulate the diversity of the African Diaspora. Theater Alliance will partner with local nonprofits to provide resources to transform words into tangible actions that make real change!

“We are taken on a journey of the birth of the black man, in all his complexity and dimension – low resonating tones of beauty intermingled with tears, soul music and hip hop. But there is nothing more powerful than the VOICE of each cast member: harrowing and filling, vulnerable and tender, hilarious one minute and terrifying the next, like eye-gazing. Nothing is hidden. This piece is a classic leaving us teary-eyed, full of love and desire for deeper connection through understanding.”
MD Theatre Guide: WORD BECOMES FLESH (review)
“I can say, without hyperbole, it is one of the best and most innovative pieces of theatre I have ever seen and I highly recommended it to everyone, even people who think this isn’t their “thing.” I brought my husband, a fan of David Mamet-esque plays where people talk at each other, and he loved it as much as I did.”
DC Theatre Scene: WORD BECOMES FLESH (review)
“”Word Becomes Flesh” is a shining example of what hip-hop theatre can and should be: a combination of precise choreography, powerful language, and a striking message.”
