Why Join Our Board
We are building a new permanent home that is far more than a theater. We have designed an accessible arts hub that will anchor community vitality, spark civic engagement, and elevate underrepresented voices. This project channels resources and cultural capital into creating a space where art and community can flourish, supporting flexible performances, creative work, and gathering. It will be a vibrant center that fosters shared success and mutual support.
In this next chapter, we are piloting a new model of solidarity economics with shared resources between local arts and cultural organizations, with mission alignment, ensuring our arts ecosystem thrives. Being on the Theater Alliance Board will give you the opportunity to help shape, support, and sustain Washington, D.C.’s vibrant and growing arts community, with an organization centering integrity, diversity, and excellence in all that we do.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Ability to uphold and steward the mission, vision, and values of Theater Alliance, and our commitment to a full, diverse, and socially inclusive arts eco-system in Washington, DC.
- Attend and prepare for all board meetings and retreats.
- Offer strategic guidance and support for the organization
- Serve on committees or task forces and offer to take on special assignments when your capacity allows.
- Attend all Theater Alliance performances, and as many functions, such as special events, as possible.
- Be informed about the organization’s services, policies, and programs.
- Advocate for and about the work of organization to your network/communities
- Keep up-to-date on developments in the non-profit arts field.
- Follow conflict-of-interest and confidentiality policies.
- Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities, such as reviewing the organization’s financial statements and annual budget.
Experiences Needed
We are particularly interested in identifying individuals with professional experience, connections, or interests in the following areas of focus:
- Public Policy/Government Relations/Law
- Health/Medicine/Wellness
- Marketing/Communications/Public Relations
- Social Media/Influencer Engagement
- Corporate Philanthropy/Developement
- Building/Facilities Operation
- Social Impact/Community Engagement Professionals
While prior Board experience is desired, it is not a requirement for consideration to join the Board of Theater Alliance.

Personal Commitment
As we seek to expand the Board of Directors for Theater Alliance, we are looking for passionate individuals who are able to support our growth and development into the future. Serving on this Board is an investment in shaping Washington, DC’s cultural community for generations to come, and will require your time, thoughtfulness, and resources. Some of these resources may include connecting us to members of your networks, helping expand our educational and community partnerships, or identifying new fundraising opportunities.
It is an expectation for all Board members to make a personal contribution at your giving ability that demonstrates your commitment to our work. This can be from you directly, or contributed through employee match, DAFs, or contributions from your network through personal fundraising efforts.
