Theater Alliance makes its return to live performance after a triumphant season of digital productions. The 2021-2022 lineup of bold works draw from artistic disciplines beyond what is often utilized in theater-making — inviting poetry, dance, visual art, digital media, and opera into the performances.
With a specific intention to center women’s narratives, Theater Alliance’s Season 19 opens with a devised work crafted by several artistic teams, each working in different disciplines. In its final form, A Chorus Within Her explores the varying experiences of women — before the pandemic, during the past two years, and in the future we seek to create. Next, a co-production between Theater Alliance and IN Series transports us to the mid-90s for the musical I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky. And, to close out the season, the contemporary comedy Do You Feel Anger? explores the hazards of prioritizing some people’s feelings over other’s.
Please note that until further notice, proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required to attend all Theater Alliance productions. Audiences must also keep masks on while inside the Anacostia Playhouse for the safety of artists, staff, and patrons.
A Chorus Within Her
Oct. 30 – Nov. 14, 2021
The first live production of Theater Alliance’s 2021-2022 season, A Chorus Within Her uses the lens of women’s experience to interrogate and explore the experiences of the pandemic year. Poets, choreographers, and actors have spent months conducting Zoom interviews, issuing social media surveys, mining their own identities and experiences to create one unified, experiential evening of theater.
Part ritual, part airing of difficult truths, and completely centered in authentic voices of women, A Chorus Within Her examines who we were before the pandemic . . . who we were as we survived the past year . . . and how we collectively move forward from here. Directed by Alina Collins Maldonado.
Music composed by John Adams
Libretto by June Jordan
A Co-Production by Theater Alliance and the IN Series
Feb. – March 2022
It’s 1994, and an earthquake of catastrophic proportions has just riled Los Angeles. In the aftermath, seven young people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences grapple with how to move forward. This monumental musical blends America’s popular music styles and explores the hurt and hope in our society. Directed by Raymond O. Caldwell.
Do You Feel Anger?
by Mara Nelson-Greenberg
May – June 2022
Sofia was recently hired as an empathy coach at a debt collection agency—and clearly, she has her work cut out for her. These employees can barely identify what an emotion is, much less practice deep, radical compassion for others. While they painstakingly stumble towards enlightenment, someone keeps mugging Eva in the kitchen. An outrageous comedy about the danger—and absurdity—of a world where some people’s feelings matter more than others’. Directed by Kelly Colburn.
