Internships
Theater Alliance of Washington, DC offers opportunities for the next generation of theatrical leaders to gain invaluable experience and deeper knowledge of the daily operations of a professional arts organization.
As an Intern at Theater Alliance, you will…
-Work intimately with Theater Alliance’s leadership, both staff and Board
-Produce both independent and collaborative projects in your assigned area
-Work across departments to accomplish the most immediate goals of the company
-Receive free tickets to all Theater Alliance productions and special events
-Have the opportunity to attend rehearsals of Theater Alliance productions
Internships at Theater Alliance are part-time positions, constituting at least sixteen hours a week. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a long-term commitment of at least three months. Internships are unpaid, and housing is not provided.
ARTISTIC INTERN
Supervisor: Colin Hovde, Artistic Director
Secondary Supervisor: Kat White, Literary Director
The Artistic Internship offers the opportunity to work in the administrative office of a theatre dedicated to producing new works. The Artistic Intern is exposed to all areas of artistic administration including casting, budgeting, and organizing special events. The Assistant will also aid in Literary duties, such as reading scripts, writing reports, and participating in season planning meetings with Theater Alliance’s artistic leadership. Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills are essential.
PRODUCTION INTERN
Supervisor: Nathaniel Mendez, Associate Artistic Director
Secondary Supervisor: Production Manager
The Production Internship will be an integral part of all technical areas of Theater Alliance’s productions, readings, and special events. The Production Intern will work closely with designers and crew on the construction of scenic elements and will also participate in electrics call, in addition to aiding the Production Manager on coordinating the budgeting and scheduling of each production. Interns will have opportunities to attend all Production Meetings and work on production run crews. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, as well as a healthy sense of humor.
MARKETING AND DEVELOPMENT INTERN
Supervisor: Camille Kashaka, Marketing and Communications Director
Secondary Supervisor: Colin Hovde, Artistic Director
The Marketing and Development Intern will provide general support to the Marketing and Development Departments of Theater Alliance. In Marketing, the Intern will have a specific focus on electronic communications and press, such as maintaining communications lists, assisting with the production of all show-related communications, maintaining departmental calendars, and assisting with the theatre’s social media efforts. In Development, the Intern will assist with grant research and composition, donor database maintenance, and gift acknowledgement, in addition to assisting with Opening Nights, benefits, and all other special events. This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to skillfully handle sensitive material, and a strong ability to multi-task.
EDUCATION INTERN
Supervisor: Katie Ryan, Education and Outreach Director
The Education Internship offers the opportunity to be deeply involved in the organization and execution of Theater Alliance’s Summer Theatre Camps. The Education Intern will participate in the administrative coordination of classes, such as maintaining budgets, organizing student files, and arranging for guest teaching artists. The Intern will also participate in all theatrical games, exercises, and actor training classes led by the Camp Director, as well as assist the Director in the execution of each camp’s final performance showcase. The Intern will have opportunities to lead exercises and games and will work with young students on the development of their vocal and physical storytelling abilities. Experience in working with children is required, as well as a cheerful, flexible attitude and healthy sense of humor. Please note this internship is offered only from mid-June to mid-August and attendance at each day of classes is required.
